Dance has always been an after school opportunity for girls at Hutchison. It is a great activity for anyone who loves the arts. With COVID, dance has had to change a bit. There are options to do it virtually over Google Classroom, and there are different studios for each division. Lower school stays in the usual dance studio, middle school uses the theater, and high school practices in sun studio. They stand far apart from each other to prevent the spread.

Some good news for people who love to dance, there could be an option for National Honors Society for Dance Arts in upper school. The thing that stands in the way of that, is the fact that dance class is not done during the school day, it is a class taken after school. Luckily, the upper school dance studio is a registered dance studio in Memphis, so there is a way to get a chapter in the National Honors Society Dance Arts at Hutchison. Emma Day ‘21 said, “We are talking to different local dance studios to figure out how they did it so we can finally get this done.” Fortunately, Hutchison has been approved of a chapter, which makes it more likely that this will happen. 

This National Honors Society Dance Arts will be a perfect opportunity for those who are passionate about dance. Inspired by other honor societies at Hutchison, Day explained, “I have been dancing with Louisa Koeppel since I was three years old, and I am going to school for dance. I was thinking how Hutchison has a society for almost everything, but we do not have anything for dance. So I thought that I would do it.” 

Hutchison has been granted a chapter in the National Honors Society Dance Arts, but the girls in dance will need to write a letter to Adrienne Forgette, Upper School Head, to get it approved by the school.  Day has been working hard at getting this society at Hutchison. When asked about dance she happily replies, “It is the love of my life.”
